Twitter is now coming up with a new concept called Verified Accounts. The Twitter hype can be felt all over the web because of its many users from celebrities to business companies and ordinary individuals. ‘Verified Accounts’ can be a very significant step taken by Twitter although there is no official statement yet from the social network site. Twitter also denied about the new concept without any settlements of additional news.
A lawsuit was filed by the manager of St. Louis Cardinals – Tony La Russa because of the impersonation problems faced by the social site. Officials of Twitter also denied such news. Twitter has left over any case settlements. They added more promising news to their followers and covered the current news on the new concept.
According to a certain blog post, it was clearly reported that Verified Accounts by Twitter is true but it is not going to be released until late this summer. Experiments will first be conducted with public agencies, public officials, athletes, famous artists, and other popular individuals who are prone to impersonation. Twitter hopes to verify the accounts of all their users but since extensive resources are required, they will do the tests first in small sets.
Many celebs and famous individuals use Twitter to stay connected. However, these people are also prone to impersonation. Is there really a way to tell if the one tweeting is actually the real celebrity? Twitter is trying to answer this question by experimenting on the Verified Accounts.
With the advent of social network websites, impersonators pop up from nowhere. Oftentimes, well-known people like celebrities and big companies are victimized. Since the profiles in social networks are faceless, it is frequently abused. When creating a profile, verification is no longer required unlike when you’re opening your bank account.
Twitter is greatly affected by the impersonation issue. Since it’s very easy to create an account in Twitter and you can send anonymous tweets to all your followers, unscrupulous individuals are taking advantage of such situation.
Well, before you impersonate a popular individual on Twitter, you must keep in mind that you may be subject to legal action like that of the lawsuit filed by La Russa. Tony said that the tweets were demeaning and derogatory and he suffered from emotional distress. Since Twitter did not make any settlements with La Russa but it is trying hard to prevent such situation from reoccurring.
According to the co-founder of Twitter, Biz Stone, their company is willing to face court and have their service terms examined. The account which impersonated La Russa was also suspended to prevent further complications.
Twitter has enormous accounts on its site and there are various ways to verify accounts. For now, users will simply have to wait until ‘Verified Accounts’ is released. Twitter has conquered the internet world in a very short time and perhaps in the coming months, the website will be able to enhance some of its features to ensure that no impersonation can take place. Twitterers are now hoping that the Verified Accounts will also be made available to ordinary persons.
